Senegal Parrot – Species Information

Senegal Parrot

Poicephalus senegalus

This species has an extremely large range and the population trend appears to be stable.  This species has been heavily trade; however despite international exports of vast numbers of birds, trade does not appear to have seriously impacted this species overall, with no significant national population declines reported.

This species occurs through the savanna woodland belt of West Africa, undertaking seasonal movements in at least parts of its range, moving into dryer areas during the wet season.  It has two slightly differentiated and one poorly differentiated subspecies.

Meyer’s Parrot

Poicephalus meyeri

This species has a large range and the population trend appears to be stable.   It has been heavily traded: since 1981, when it was listed on CITES Appendix II, 75,387 wild-caught individuals have been recorded in international trade (UNEP-WCMC CITES Trade Database, January 2005).

There are six subspecies separable into two groupings identified by intensity of plumage colouration: three paler subspecies from drier regions and three darker subspecies from humid regions.

Jardines Parrot

Poicephalus gulielmi

Also known as the Red-fronted Parrot, there are three slightly differentiated subspecies in discrete populations, two in lowlands and one in the eastern highlands of central Africa.

This species has a large range, and despite the fact that the population trend appears to be decreasing, and even though the species is described as “uncommon” in at least parts of its range, the decline is not believed to be sufficiently rapid to approach the thresholds for Vulnerable under the population trend criterion (>30% decline over ten years or three generations).

This species has been heavily traded: since 1976, 43,358 wild-caught individuals have been recorded in international trade (UNEP-WCMC CITES Trade Database, January 2005).
